Gulf Coast high School senior Grant Robinson has been named a 2009 National Achievement Semifinalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Program. The program named more than 1,600 black American high school seniors who were designated semifinalists.
The scholastically-talented students named as semifinalists now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for about 800 scholarships, worth more than $2.6 million, to be awarded next spring.
The National Achievement Scholarship Program, conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, is a privately funded academic competition that operates without government assistance. It was initiated in 1964 to recognize promising black American students, and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants.
