The Lely High golf teams lost in their season openers on Thursday.
The boys all had decent rounds, each shooting in the 40s for nine holes, but Palmetto Ridge had two boys in the 30s and two in the low 40s to win at Valencia Golf and Country Club.
The Bears won with an overall total of 157 to Lely’s 171.
For Lely girls, Coach Kevin Smith’s lack of veteran players showed. The veterans, Kora Johnson, 44 and Katy Francisco, 54, led the team, but first-time players Ashley Russetto, 70 and Beatris Francisco, 76, couldn’t keep pace at Hammock Bay Golf and Country Club. Palmetto’s overall score was 194, compared to Lely’s 244.
Palmetto’s girls were led by freshman Celine McClimans with a 43 for the best overall round of the day. Brigette Perl shot 45, Mo Turley, 48 and Stephanie Chastain, 49.
The Lady Bears Coach Mark Rosenbalm said, “It was a great outing. We shot the best score in school history.”
Kevin Smith, the Lady Trojans coach, said, “With this being just the second time we’ve been together, I was tremendously pleased with our overall play.”
Kim Francisco, Lely boys coach, said, “For the first match we weren’t bad, but every player could have easily knocked three strokes each off their score. They are capable of playing better golf, but the wet conditions may have been part of their scores.”
The boys host Golden Gate on Wednesday and Palmetto on Thursday at Lely Flaming and Mustang courses. The girls travel to Golden Gate on Wednesday and are at Palmetto on Thursday. All start times are 3 p.m.
