Eye on the Y: October, the month of changes

October is known as the month of changes. Changes in weather will bring to us cooler temperatures and less humidity. Further changes include shorter hours of sunlight (time change will be 2 a.m. on Nov. 1) and putting away the shorts and getting out the long pants and windbreakers.

The Greater Marco Family YMCA also has changes in store for its members. New programs will be starting soon, instructors you know and love will be returning to teach various aerobic classes and of course, the influx of returnees to the island will increase our monthly membership counts.

Two major events will be happening this month.

The first is the Greater Marco Family YMCA Singles and Doubles Tennis Tournament to be held from Oct. 24 to 26 at the Y. Apply online at the USTA Web site www.ustaflorida.com or by stopping by the Y’s Customer Service desk. If you need more information, call Connie at 394-3144 ext. 224.

The second event is the Oktoberfest celebration at the Esplanade. This special Y fundraising event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Oct. 26. German food will be provided by CJ’s on the Bay, Guy Harvey’s, Mozart’s and Tara’s Steakhouse. Food and drink tickets will be sold in $1 increments and only $5 gets you in the gate. Kids under 12 years of age are free.

Music will be provided by “Northern Sounds” from Pittsburgh, Pa., and me. There will also be a special children’s area.

Make plans now to attend Oktoberfest. Volunteers are needed to work at various areas during the morning and afternoon and adults can sign up by calling 394-3144 ext. 0 or stopping by the Customer Service desk.

Cycling classes continue to be popular. Various times and days are available to cycle. Members get priority bike reservations. Check the YMCA calendar on Wednesday in the Eagle.

If you are looking for a job, contact Family Service Director Stephanie Pepper at 394-3144 ext. 203 and find out what job openings are available, or head over to the Y Web site, www.marcoislandymca.org.

Sign ups continue for Ballet and Dance classes, Kids Karate, Kids Basketball — Learn the Game.

There is something for everyone at your Greater Marco Family YMCA. Hope to see you at the Y.
