Teacher Anne Fleming knew something was up when a small army of people marched into her classroom Wednesday, but she wasn’t quite sure why.
Among the classroom crashers were staffers from OfficeMax, Tommie Barfield Elementary Principal Jory Westberry, representatives from local media, and three or four of Fleming’s fellow teachers.
A brand new leather chair and a huge box of school supplies was the give-away for Fleming, who reacted with delight when told she’d been selected as a recipient of “A Day Made Better” program run by OfficeMax.
“I’m speechless,” Fleming exclaimed, “And that doesn’t happen very often in here.”
Her third grade students made up for that with excited chatter, all keen to help her find out what was in the box.
Earlier, OfficeMax Assistant Manager Clinton Nitz briefed the group, before surprising Fleming, by pointing out that many teachers tend to spend their own money on some supplies.
He said this was the company’s way of addressing one good deed with another.
Company General Manager Alan Cooper said about 1,200 teachers nationwide are being honored with the annual A Day Made Better award.
OfficeMax chronicles the awards on its Web site: adaymadebetter.com.
