Lely's Maria Reyes slams the ball downfield as Marco's Stephanie Vergo races to get in position.
Marco's Amanda Lopez brings ball down as sister, Gabby, looks for a pass in Lely's loss to Gulf Coast.
The Lely girls soccer team features a young starting lineup that Coach Mark Lopez expects will get better as the season progresses.
The team went 6-9-1 last year, but has already won three of five games.
Offensive power is in the legs of Lopez’s daughter Gabby, a senior, Ceira Abundez, a junior, and freshman Amanda Lopez, also Lopez’s daughter.
Gabby set a school record with 23 goals last season, while Abundez was second on the goal-scoring chart. Amanda lead the Marco Island Charter Middle School team in scoring.
Gabby already has eight goals, while Melchiorre has two shutouts in goal.
Veterans whom Lopez thinks will be key performers are senior goalie Katy Melchiorre, senior sweeper Dallan Diaz, sophomore midfielder Maggie Antaramian, sophomore defender Stephanie Vergo and junior goalkeeper Kayla Douglas.
Rounding out the team are seniors Lindsey Donato, Chelsea Fletcher, Marisol Navarette, juniors Maria Juarez and Georgia Cudmore, sophomores Jennifer Cervantes, Yasmine Hauber and Maria Reyes and freshmen Justine Giles and Veronica Everly. Bono Lopez is the assistant coach.
“We beat Naples for the first time and we expect to win more games than last season,” said Lopez.
