It’s win or go home for Lely
Trojans on the playoff road at Dunbar
Win or go home. An anguishing idiom that unfortunately is true for the Lely and Fort Myers-Dunbar football teams on Friday nightt.
Lely, 7-3, travels to Fort Myers for a 7:30 p.m. regional playoff contest.
Dunbar, 9-1, lost for the first time last Friday, but of more concern is their quarterback position. Dunbar lost its starting quarterback to a broken leg three games ago and has had trouble filling a major position in the lineup.
In its loss to Plantation-American Heritage, the team totaled only 106 total yards of offense.
Comparing Lely’s high-powered offense, which has run up more than 1,000 total yards in the last two games, it would seem the Trojans have the edge.
But the game is played on the field, not in the newspaper.
“They have tremendous speed and a big offensive line,” Lely Coach Steve Pricer said. “They’ve been able to run the ball, but their passing attack seems limited to short stuff and the really deep pass.”
For the most part Pricer said Dunbar has been living off the big play.
“With their speed on offense and defense, they have lived off the break-away runs, kickoff returns and interceptions,” Pricer said. “They are small up front defensively, but fly to the ball.”
Although he threw three interceptions in the loss to Gulf Coast, Lely Quarterback Dennis Marcelin threw for 287 yards. Darian Hall, Lely and the county’s leading rusher, did not play, but Frankie Pugh ran for 169 yards in his place.
“Dennis had a pretty good game,” Pricer said of Marcelin’s play against Gulf Coast where he also ran for more than 100 yards. “He’s a 17-year-old senior playing his first year at quarterback. Our passing game is a bit complex and he has done very well learning his responsibilities,” said Pricer.
Hall had the Gulf Coast game off, recuperating from some nagging minor injuries.
“He’s ready to go and the offensive line has to continue to block well,” said Pricer. “Against a team with speed, our linemen have to hold their blocks longer.”
Emmanuel Eduoard, the team’s leading tackler, is finally back to full capacity. He missed all last season due to a broken leg. Mike Snyder, the team’s third best tackler, sat out most of the second half because of a low right foot problem, but will be starting.
“The team has worked hard this week,” said Pricer. “They have been pretty upbeat and we feel good about our chances.”
