Marco’s Pete Calcagnini has been the mystery man at Lely football games.
Many have asked, “Who is the guy in the construction hat with the Lely emblem?”
The father of lineman Matt Calcagnini, Pete started wearing the hat when Matt started playing freshman football.
“I came up with the idea when I saw Matt and others working so hard at practice,” Calcagnini said. “I told Matt that his job was like a construction worker, you have to keep your nose to the grind stone.”
Calcagnini went to then Coach Chris Metzger if he could have the Lely “L” and put it on a hard hat.
“You know the linemen work their tails off, it is not a white collar job,” he said.
Now a senior, Matt is one a cadre of offensive linemen who have opened holes for running back Darian Hall to lead the area in rushing.
