Telephone terror

Recently, I was working with a manufacturing client in Wisconsin when one of their service pros, told me a remarkable story. Sally shared that a few years ago her Mom had passed away. And it was Sally’s responsibility to to “close-out” her mom’s accounts.

When Sally attempted to terminate her mother’s phone service, it wasn’t easy. Unfortunately, she was stuck with a dim-witted service agent. While Sally explained that she wanted to pay off the final balance and terminate the account because of her mother’s death, the service agent didn’t get it.

Finally, after Sally’s repeated attempts, she thought the service agent understood. Until Sally was asked, “So, do you think your mother would like a high speed internet connection?”

Academic antics

When I sign-in or sign-out our youngest daughter Amanda from junior high school, I need to jot down a “reason.” Typical “reasons” posted by other parents are: Illness or a doctor’s appointment.

I never found these very creative. Which is why, I literally make entries like: Nuclear fission, global warming or nano technology. The amazing thing, is the nurse or an administrator merely glances, nods and says, “That’s fine!”

Teenage tummy

There are lots of advantages to being an 18-year old male, especially diet. Earlier this year, our son burst into the house and declared, “dad, you’ve gotta taste this sandwich, it’s incredible! It’s the Baconator ... a hamburger, with bacon, cheese and mayo!” (The wrapper includes emergency numbers for 911 and a cardiologist!)

You know you’re getting old when ...

A friend recently commented, “you know you’re getting older when you turn on your computer and your home page is a local pharmacy!”

In March, just before St. Patrick’s Day, I was walking down Market Street in San Francisco, when I spotted the following on a movie marquis: “Free admissiion with a Leprachaun!”

Can you see me now?!

How come, when my wife and I go shopping together, we spend most of the time apart ... and on our cell phones asking, “Where are you?”

B-day banter

My mother-in-law, Beverly, is very entertaining. By accident. For example, she and I recently had the following conversation:

Me: How was your day mom?

Her: Very interesting ... I went to my cousin’s birthday party.

Me: How was it?

Her: Wonderful. Although, last month, my cousin knew who I was. Today, she couldn’t remember me.

Me: Mom, she’s 100!

Her: Good point. Guess you’re right!

Farm flourishes

In April and May, I had speaking engagements in New Orleans. While there both times, I kept seeing the weirdest commercial. Perhaps, because I’m a “city boy.”

A husband and wife wax rhapsodic about leaving the stress of corporate America to become entrepreneurs. Like them, you too, could soon be running a business, where you own a farm to raise and breed ... alpacas!

Breakfast banter

Recently I overheard a conversation, between a husband and wife, about a sign promoting the hotel’s “Free Breakfast Bar!”

Her: I don’t get why that “free breakfast bar” is such a big deal?

Him: What do you mean?

Her: Well, why would some one get so excited about that, that it’s a reason to stay here?

Him: It’s free food and lots of it!

Her: Lots! Are you kidding? Those “breakfast bars” are tiny. No bigger than a candy bar!

Pants protection

Recently, I went shopping with Brittany, our 18-year old daughter. I remember when a store’s safe was under lock and key. Now, the blue jeans are!
