True spirit

About 150 people flocked to the House of Mozart restaurant Thursday and Friday to enjoy Oktoberfest as traditionally intended.

Owners Alfred and Manuela Schinagl brought in a bone fide Austrian band for the two evenings, stretched the tables for true Oktoberfest authenticity, and served up German food and beer to complete the eat, drink and be merry theme.

Alfred Schinagl said both evenings had been sell-out successes, prompting a probable repeat performance from the Austrian-born, Vermont-based Stratton Mountain Boys next year.

The restaurant is situated at the Shops of Marco mall off S. Barfield Drive.

Cue from Wall Street’s woes

A free seminar on managing financial management crises takes place 11 a.m. Friday, at the Marco Island Area Association of Realtors’ building on Waterway Drive.

Presented by SCORE and Corporate Turnaround under the auspices of MIAAOR and the Marco Island Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business Alliance Committee, the seminar takes its cue from the volatility on Wall Street at the moment.

Running about two hours, the seminar also includes a luncheon, but the function is limited to the first 50 people who respond. Call 394-7549.

Bundles of joy

In the indulgent children’s’ world of XBox 360s and brand name clothes, it might come as a surprise to some that many kids on Marco’s doorstep wish only for bedding, pyjamas and toiletries like everyone else.

Addressing the needs of the children of migrant workers is Bedtime Bundles, a non-profit organization founded by Marco resident Karen Saeks.

One drive will come to fruition at 4 p.m. Thursday, when M&I Bank’s Heart of Gold fund will present a $2,500 check to Bedtime Bundles.

The bundles are packaged in pillowcases for easy transportation when children move with their parents from camp to camp.

Currently, the organization focuses on 1,999 migrant children in Collier County.

Some children who’ve benefited from the organization will be on hand at the bank to witness the latest donation.

Veteran at the helm

Marriott’s Crystal Shores time-share development at the south end of Marco Island now has a general manager.

He is Patrick Botwright, a 19-year Marriott veteran who has held many executive positions within the company.

He is a family man with four children, and will relocate to Marco Island.

Phase one occupancy (of 67 out of more than 250 planned units) at the development is scheduled for March of 2009.

King appointment

Local magazine editor B.J. King has been appointed to the board of the American Cancer Society, Greater Marco Island Unit.

King, a three-year resident of Marco Island and major contributor to the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute’s Foundation, will serve on the major gifts committee, in addition to contributing to fund raising initiatives and public relations efforts.

She is editor of Marco Magazine and a member of the Marco Eagle staff.
