The Lely Invitational boasted the top runners in Collier and Lee Counties and didn’t disappoint cross country enthusiasts on Saturday.

Kathryn and Erika Fluehr sandwiched in Immokalee’s Joane Pierre as they led the Community School of Naples girls to the win. Kathryn, nursing a tight right hamstring, said she tried to be a bit conservative, but when a runner has Pierre giving chase it is isn’t all that easy to stay that route.

Pierre, who ran her second-best time of her highly-touted career, still finished 17 seconds behind Fluehr, who ran the three-mile distance in 18:06.

Lely’s Amber Imm of Marco, raced to fifth in 19:48. Imm, who is recovering from mononucleosis, said she is about 80 percent back to form.

Lely finished 12th. Rounding out the top five for Lely were Heather Chairez, 35th, Jade Dworkin, 37th, Katie Hogan, 74th and Miranda Demaio, 90th.

Charlotte’s Tyler Cardillo was the boys winner in 16:15, leading his team to the title.

Lely’s Andy Martinez led the Trojans with a 14th place finish in 17:09. Following him were teammates Ulises Vivar, 30th, Darryl Townsend, 47th, Chad Snyder, 55th and Travers Benjamin, 58th.

Lely travels to Veterans Park in Lehigh on Saturday for the Class 3A-District 10 competition.

“The boys are focused and have a good chance to move onto regional competition,” Lely Coach Mark McGarity said. “The girls need to push to pick up runners who will have better times in the fourth and fifth position when you count five (race) times.”
