Marco Island’s Lauren Embree advanced to the consolation fifth round of the USTA Girls 18s National Championship in Berkeley, Calif., with a pair of wins on Thursday.
Wednesday night, Embree lost to No. 4 Irina Falconi of Jupiter 7-5, 7-6 (6) in the Round of 32 in the championship bracket.
Thursday, she beat Alexandra Leatu of Littleton, Colo., 6-3, 6-2, and Jo-Jo Sanford of Diamond Bar, Calif., 7-5, 6-1. She’ll play No. 7 seed Jamie Hampton of Auburn, Ala., Friday at noon ET, then would play again at 4 p.m. if she wins.
Earlier, former Naples resident Amy Simidian lost her first match, to Emina Bektas of Indianapolis, 6-2, 6-4, and Naples’ Chloe Smith lost her first-round match to Claire Bartlett of Chattanooga, Tenn., 6-2, 6-2. Both were eliminated in their first consolation matches.
