The Florida Highway Patrol may have solved the mystery of a man who went missing on Marco Island last week.
FHP found a 2000 Ford Mustang matching the description of the one driven by the missing man obscured by trees on the side of Interstate 75, according to a report. The man inside the vehicle was dead. The cause of death is pending.
Investigators believe the vehicle was traveling west on I-75 near mile marker 103 when it traveled off the road and onto the north shoulder. The vehicle collided with several trees in a wooded area and came to rest obscured from view by trees and brush.
The vehicle went unnoticed for at least 24 hours, according to the report.
Police are waiting to identify the driver’s next of kin before identifying him.
An endangered missing person bulletin was sent out on July 24 for Jimmie Spell who went missing after vacationing with his family in Marco Island.
A flier circulated by Spell’s family says the 62-year-old man was last seen at noon on July 24 leaving 100 Palm St. on Marco Island. He was believed to be alone and heading north on I-75 to Valdosta, Ga.
He was wearing dark blue shorts with pockets and a light blue tank top and driving a green 2000 Ford Mustang convertible with a tan top, according to the flier.
Spell never arrived in Valdosta.
