YMCA cuts budget, staff

While leaders of the Marco YMCA maintain the organization is doing well locally, the national YMCA system and international economy is taking its toll.
Cindy Love, executive director of the Greater Marco Family YMCA, said the organization is cutting its budget by 10 percent. Love said the cuts will affect employees, but not services.

Two Lee County men charged with marine scrap metal theft

Charges of stealing marine scrap metal and reselling it have been leveled against two Lee County men. Alvin Davila, 34, of 9352 Mantanzas Road, Fort Myers, and Daryl Eugene Fischer, 34, of 2119 Snead Drive, Lehigh, face charges of burglary, grand theft and trafficking stolen property. Davila faces an additional count of illegally claiming ownership of the scrap metal, Lee County Sheriff’s Office arrest records show.

Clyde and Niki Butcher were so sympathetic to the plight of Carol Moseman, a popular Everglades City figure, that they donated two valuable pictures for a raffle to raise funds for her medical expenses. Unfortunately, Carol passed away before the prizes were drawn and now the raffle proceeds will be used to memorialize her.

The last prime Marco Island beach site, between Tigertail and Caxambas Point, has been reported sold by a Deltona Corp. subsidiary to Dutch investors. The 7.3-acre site, between Guflview Apartments and Admiralty House condominium, sold for a reported $3.1 million. Deltona Land & Development Corp. sold the property to Yaminta Corp., a Curacao Corp. located in the Netherlands.

It’s time for winter annual beds to be planted. It has been nice cool fall weather so far. This will allow your annuals to establish and begin to grow without the stress of hot weather.
I wrote earlier about preparing the gardens for planting by tilling or turning the soil six inches deep and then incorporating two to three inches of organic matter, such as cow manure and peat, into the planting beds. This will increase the nutrient and water holding capacity of our sandy soil.

So what exactly is a marine surveyor and what does one do?
Friday I attended the Fort Myers Boat Show. I was there renewing contacts and making new ones within the boat sales, insurance and finance world as well as talking to representatives of the various boating clubs that were in attendance.
While speaking to a broker friend I was introduced as a marine surveyor to a couple that was boat shopping. The couple exchanged blank looks then asked: “What is a marine surveyor?” It was then I realized that maybe my readers in the Eagle weren’t quite sure about just what it is I do.
